Two people arrested with suspected radioactive material Californium near Kolkata airport

The West Bengal Crime Investigation Department has arrested two persons from an area near the Kolkata airport for illegal possession of radioactive substances, which have an "estimated worth of Rs 4,250 crore", a senior officer said on Thursday.

Two people identified as Sailan Karmakar and Asit Ghosh were arrested by the CID officers. Accused Sailan Karmakar and Asit Ghosh are the residents of the Hooghly district.

CID officers recovered four pieces of ash-colored stones weighed about 250.5 grams. As per the source, all the material entered the city from Karnataka via railways.

According to preliminary investigation, it is revealed that the seized articles might be Californium, which is a radioactive metal as per internet source. Cost of Californium is roughly 17 crores per grams as per Indian currency.

What is Californium.?

Californium is a radioactive chemical element with the symbol Cf and atomic number 98. The element was first synthesized in 1950 at the Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory (then the University of California Radiation Laboratory), by bombarding curium with alpha particles (helium-4 ions). The element was named after the university and the U.S. state of California.

Californium-252 is a very strong neutron emitter. One microgram releases 170 million neutrons per minute, which presents biological hazards. Proper safeguards should be used in handling californium.

This is a transition news. More updates are yet to come on this. As soon as the update comes, I will bring another separate blog. For the time being stay connected with us.
